Sussex Spaniel
The Sussex Spaniel is a compact, low-to-the-ground breed native to Southern England, sharing a similar appearance and antiquity with the Clumber Spaniel.
Despite their capacity for field work, the Sussex is a slow-paced, calm breed in the home. They possess a charmingly clownish and energetic temperament that they usually keep in check.
They are extremely people-focused, are excellent with children, and display a protective instinct toward their family. This stable disposition makes them fantastic candidates for therapy dog work.
While they are competent hunters, most are primarily cherished family pets.
The Sussex is a capable, if somewhat stubborn, working dog. They have excellent noses and a natural ability to quarter in the field (search an area in a grid pattern). They can be trained to retrieve, though their training may be challenged by their stubbornness.
