When Connecting is Communication

If you ever feel like your dog has selective hearing, you aren’t alone. We may feel our dog is being stubborn, but normally, it is just a communication gap creating misunderstanding.
Try moving your approach from “commanding” to “connecting.” Look at these three situations as examples:
Without realising it we can pay more attention to our dogs when they’re doing something wrong. Reward your dog when they are doing nothing or being calm. Praise, gentle stroke or a treat and you will get more of what you give your attention to.
Dogs are visual processors first. Your hand signals and posture often mean more to them than the words coming out of your mouth. Check your energy. Are you feeling stressed, in a rush and patience is lowered. Your dog will react to that. Stay calm, keep your gestures clear, and watch how quickly they settle.
Repeating “Sit, Sit, Sit” teaches your dog that the first two requests didn’t count. Say it once. Reward with praise and a treat. One cue = One action.
