Do you know about giardia?

Whenever anyone comes to us with a request to rehome their dog, we always ask why they are looking to rehome. The majority of times it’s because there have been behavioural changes with their dog and they are unable to pin down exactly why…it could come across as ‘for no reason’. There is always a reason for a dog changing its behaviour, it’s often that we just don’t noticed exactly when or why. It may be sporadic, it may be that one day the behaviour has changed and been the same ever since.

From personal experience, this change usually comes about through discomfort or pain more than actual aggression due to environmental changes. Much of the time, people will tell us there has been a change in behaviour when they got on put on their dog’s harness. The first thing we will then do is ask the owner to take their dog to their vet to check for giardia.

It’s not uncommon for a puppy to be successfully treated for giardia but for it to flare up again later in life. Imagine the worst stomach pain you have ever had and someone trying to make you fasten a belt.
