Following up on my post yesterday about the importance of mental regulation over pure physical exhaustion: let’s talk about ball play.
We may reach for the ball launcher as a “quick fix” to tire our dogs out. While it’s a popular activity, it is vital to consider the long-term impact on a dog’s body—especially when it goes beyond just one or two low throws. Repetitive high-impact jumping, twisting, and sudden braking can take a massive toll on their joints.
Intense fetching can lead to repetitive strain injuries and exacerbate joint issues.
Instead of regulating a dog, excessive ball play can keep them in a state of high adrenaline, making it harder for them to “switch off” later. And dogs are masters at masking discomfort when they are over-excited…because they don’t always feel it.
The team at Canine Arthritis Management (CAM) does incredible work highlighting the physical risks associated with these activities. I highly recommend visiting their page to learn more about how we can protect our dogs’ mobility: facebook.com/CAMarthritis
Let’s prioritise length and quality of life over exhaustion.
