We have all had a time when our dog has barked in public or at home, and it is far too easy to wish they would just be quiet. The truth however is that barking is never random.
Think of it as your dogs way to send a text message. They are trying to tell you something.
There are a few reasons they could be barking such as:
Warning
Guarding
Fear/Anxiety
Excitement
Frustration
Learned Behaviour (we have accidentally given them the wrong attention, or the right attention at the wrong time and caused the dog to think it is to bark)
Pay attention to the Pitch – is it high or low, the duration, and the frequency. These are the clues to their emotional state.
So instead of immediately trying to quieten them and worry what people thin, try to understand why they are barking. When we help them navigate the situation that caused the bark, the noise naturally reduces because they feel understood, heard and that you have reassured them.
