Christmas Communication

Our dogs are communicating to us all the time, and we may not realise it.

We are so conditioned in to noticing barking, growling, snapping and of course a bite that we forget all the other signs a dog will use to show how they feel.

This sheet from Dr Sophia Yin clearly shows some of the lower level signs a dog may use when unsure, uncomfortable, worried, needing space or not wanting to be touched.

Look out for these signs and listen to them, particularly over Christmas. Your dog is not being awkward, difficult, moody, dominant, spoilt – or whatever else other people may try to tell you.

They have their own way of communication, and it is really important we understand this and work with them.

If they need space, or don’t want to be touched, cuddled, picked up, or have someone standing directly over them – that is all ok and perfectly normal. You do not have a bad dog, you have a dog that needs some space, time and above all respect for the fact it is trying to show you what it is struggling with.

The more we listen and look out for their communications, then change the situation accordingly, the more your dog will thank you and trust even more.
